So it started with her son, Curran, who had a really really high fever. Yeah, so he had a high fever for a few days and I was trying to manage it at home and it was fairly manageable but it continued to be high 105 or so and would go down and up and then he was eating drinking but the herbs weren’t really fully helping as far as healing the illness and after like four days I decided to take him to the hospital because he was dehydrated. That’s a good call. Now as you know if you’ve taken the medicine classes we teach that you should let a fever run because there’s a it’s a healing process but 105 is pretty high and 105 for four days it’s time to go to plan B, yeah for sure.
So what I kept in my mind was like okay I’m going to be a client. I actually thought of it in those terms like I’m going to be a client or customer so I’m going to ask for what I want for my son because they’re providing services so that kind of like got my mind in that frame after hearing horror stories of what can happen here and everywhere right of giving your power over and obeying treat for obeying in ways that we’d rather not. Yeah the medical system is it’s a thing yeah it’s a thing yeah and so you take her into the hospital.
So I take her into the hospital and at the local community center they couldn’t really handle what was going on so they sent us in an ambulance to the nearest city and we went to a public hospital there and there they did a few tests a lot of them were actually repeats from the other hospital and they stabilized him with an IV to make sure you know to keep his… That always helps. Yeah yeah it’s like rehydration. Yeah it’s a great skill too to have at home actually knowing how to do IVs and so from that hospital they also didn’t feel capable to continue to provide him care they suspected it was dengue and they wanted us to go to another hospital a few hours away so before when that ambulance had come and for whatever reason they had delayed the paperwork or the computer work until he was leaving and so at that point they pulled up a woman pulled up what I was supposed to sign when I brought him to the hospital yeah and I read every word make sure that I was okay signing and agreeing to it and about the third page was saying that I agreed that the state the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was going to be partial parent in all capital letters like our social security name right is attached and that also this the commonwealth would be the primary custodian of there you go you lose control of your your kid yeah and your choice right there and your choice yeah so I said well I can’t find this and she’s quiet and looked at me and I said I if I need to go I apologize that I came here that you called the ambulance but I I cannot sign this so if this is against policy I’ll just take my child right now we’ll go home she looked at me and then she just used her finger and swiped the screen and went to the next page to sign so it was that easy it was that easy that part was yeah right so you had somebody on the inside who was kind of clued in and yeah willing to let this you know let it go deal with the system the way the system yeah yeah but so you go to the next hospital and that was a little more challenging the next hospital was longer paperwork um now this is like two hours away yeah yeah so this is an adventure and you’re not in an ambulance there yeah they took us in an ambulance there so you don’t have your own transportation right or way to leave right so that is the thing um and I was on call for a birth as well so it’s like um so I’m reading that paperwork which was significantly different and I get to the part where it’s all of these initials and the one says that I agree to any and all treatment including chemical therapy and nuclear medicine oh boy that was another big no for me personally for this child especially with a fever this so the first answer of the staff was well it doesn’t really apply and I said great okay well then I’m not signing it well but you still need to sign it it’s just he’s not going to need chemotherapy so just sign it and I said well I I can’t because I’m not agreeing so I’m not going to sign unless we can change it no and they got um pretty threatened by that and started saying why did I bring him if I was going to be non-compliant and if I don’t want the treatment I should just go and I stayed calm and I explained I would like appropriate treatment um I don’t want to sign this away and if I talk to a lawyer right now who I say is myself she would tell me don’t sign it if you don’t agree right no let me get the picture here so you’re in the hospital yeah and you’ve just said no to the first person and they’re bringing in other people that are all in these white coats and yeah the supervisor and then they’re wanting me to feel guilty and coerced into obeying and I just said I would like something more reasonable and otherwise I guess yeah I will go but that’s not my intention how many of them were there like at one one point I think probably at least five well so here you are a mother yeah your son’s got a fever you definitely need help you know it and you’re surrounded by five people who are telling you you absolutely have to do this yes and and yet you stood your ground yes to my ground but I can’t sign it I’m just there’s no way so once I continued a reason on the premise that I would love care for my my child I’m here because I want care no one forced me to come I would just like something more reasonable that I can agree to and they got a little upset and crossed it out and said that I would something along the lines that I agreed to I would have to approve the treatment that so it changed that I agreed to any treatment that I approved for my son okay so they shifted over to where you were in control over the process isn’t that amazing and we were in there for like five to seven days could have been a little bit longer and every time that they wanted to give him medicine they would show it to me and I would say yes or no well yeah yeah like the time I mentioned to you that they wanted to give him pepto bismol in an IV isn’t that ludicrous like well first of all what does he need pepto bismol for a single in an IV pepto bismol you know like oh my god the pink stuff you know oh gosh that’s terrible yeah and then another thing that I realized was how was the importance of reading every single word of because of what many of the the workers were telling me was oh but that just says this and I’d say well this is a page this is 10 pages I can’t just say three lines right so reading each sentence is where I found can I agree to this is this reasonable or no and if not we’re going to rewrite this contract and it worked yeah wow it worked that is amazing so you’re really a strong woman I well I was in that moment yeah that is it’s really I really find that incredibly inspiring because you know here’s this system that we feel like when you go you have to subject yourself to it and you actually said no and I want these are my terms and uh yeah yeah and I’m grateful for the experience because since I can speak that and I can speak that to the families I know and they’re birthing at home or they’re choosing to go to the hospital or anyone to have the lived experience I can speak that I know it’s a possibility and it’s within our reach yeah yeah Alicia and I are in a program I’ve talked to you about it before called the law for mankind or the sovereign’s way with Greg Paul and it’s all about this of how do you deal with the legal system which is this man-made fiction that quite frankly usually has evil intent honestly you know it’s really it’s really not got your best intent at heart and how do you deal with that and and how do you how do you but how do you still live with integrity and I loved how you really you know you were you were not confrontative you weren’t argumenting you were just you were just being who you were and being clear yeah and and being thoughtful and and you know um and that’s that’s also what what is all about in the in the law course so anyway Alicia’s going to be doing with me on the one that they’re doing in January which I hope you can join us is going to be all about how to structure your business and your your life the grow network is going through a big change now and you can structure things so that you are not subject to all the legal stuff and obligations and possibly taxation and that kind of stuff from the existing governmental system so I am very interested in that one that was so great to have Alicia here to show you a demonstration of you can say no you can you can go in as a man or a woman and and uh and go in on your own terms yeah thanks so much Alicia yeah all righty we’ll see you later yeah a little awkward but that’s okay
