You’re in Oahe County And I just want people to understand first where that is Hawaii County. We’re in the southwestern corner of Idaho Which means give me a town so people might you know, sorry Any seat is Murphy, which is pretty small Our other towns are home Dale Marcing Brand-view in Bruno and we have really tiny outlying towns that are But that gives that gives people kind of a start And it’s important to understand how you got an office So let’s just kind of talk about you as a person when you grew up had to get in law enforcement.
I Think Through it was like God moved me Was through prayer asking God, what do you want me to do with my life and Everything kept popping up law enforcement and I really resisted it. I was like, I do not want to be in law enforcement so when you when you go against what God is wanting you to do things. He’ll always keep steering you back so Finally, I took college courses went to college My major was administration of justice my Instructors in college happened to be Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Employees captains lieutenant sergeants.
So That was it was in the 90s I applied for the Academy and was accepted How did you when you got law enforcement then how long was it before you became sheriff and how did that Rise to sheriffmanship go if you will. Well, I moved we moved out. My wife and I moved to Idaho in 2010. Okay, and So Work I took some time off and then I joined this sheriff’s office in twenty third early 2013 and was working as a resident deputy and Then in April of 2023 the red the sheriff resigned under some shady circumstances And I wanted people to understand that because that’s how it really all started for you.
He got kind of a sideways I don’t want to really spend a lot of time on that but hey some sheriff’s aren’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing right exactly exactly and we were held accountable by our constituents the public and That’s what makes Sheriffs better than Sheriff’s offices are better than police departments in that respect That’s why sheriffs deputy sheriffs are always more approachable than police officers in my point of view Yes, we agree a hundred percent. And so when that happened then I guess the County Board or the County Commission Kind of decides who’s gonna fill the gap when there’s kind of an emergency before the next election, right? Well, what happens is so our The The Republican Committee the white County Public and Committee Has a What they did was a background on all of the candidates that put in for it I wasn’t gonna put in for it But I developed a good working relationship with the people in the area I worked and even the commissioner that worked out there He came to my door and asked me to put in for it So I was resistive of that in the beginning as well And so I I finally got the clue and went ahead and put my name in the hat The Republican Committee does did a background on everybody You submit a packet to them.
They go over everything Then they pull you they pull you in they ask you a bunch of questions And you get you get to say a five-minute spiel and after that they they would They selected they ranked everybody and then that went to the commissioners the commissioners voted and decided And that’s interesting in my opinion because in a lot of ways that go is completely different than a normal election would a normal Election would be people would you know endorse you so you get some kind of reference points you get vetted in kind of a public or a media way Etc.
In this case though, you’re vetted by those people who I Mean, are they wondering if they can control you are they because it’s a little bit. It’s quite a bit different It’s it’s along the line of police chief style I realize it’s not because eventually you’re elected, but but I’m making a point on purpose, right? Yeah, I understand. So you’d have to understand the the questions. This is a YE County The questions that were asked all 12 got to ask two questions a Lot of them had to do with gun rights Feds coming into the jurisdiction.
What would you do? constitutional questions They’re more iterate Everybody in this county is more interested in their constitutional rights than actually owning somebody and our Republican Committee is staunchly conservative and constitutional All right, and then what happened for you then so you got basically appointed the first time right? Yeah, and then I ran for election in this last November All right, the primary I won the primary and then I ran unopposed for the general election So the point is you got some pretty good challenges primary wise though I had one challenger and I won by two-thirds of the vote There you have it.
All right Interesting and so now going forward though you answer to the people which they’re you know Are they gonna be different in their expectations than say the board or the County Commission? No, we had during the the primary Before the election the primaries we had open town halls and they would add the public would ask questions and The majority of the questions were all a lot a lot of them were about guns. Most of them were constitutional a Lot of them were how are you gonna change the department here? You’re gonna put in char, you know in your administration things like that, but a great many of them were all constitutional and Gun rights came up every single time which was it was kind of I love those types of questions If you ask me a gun question, I’m like give it to me, right? In bad, you know like he was being set up or something.
It’s like those are the easy questions. Come on now
