Everyone recognises that where there is no order, chaos exists. Recognising and obeying the one in charge brings security and order to a group. Each person looks to the leader for direction and accountability, and he or she provides guidance for working through questions or problems that arise. The one in charge is ultimately responsible for the activities and productivity of the group. Isn’t this the structure of any organisation? I would give a resounding yes to that question and add that it starts with the home. In the Bible, God outlines authority structures that provide direction for the family, church, workplace, and government.
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers, for there is no power but of God. The powers that be are ordained of God, Romans 13, verse 1. The orderliness we find in structures of authority reflects the order of God’s own nature. God is a Trinity, the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. The Father sent the Son into the world as Saviour and Redeemer, see 1 John 4 verse 9. Jesus was obedient to God the Father, see John 5 verse 19. When Jesus returned to heaven, he and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to comfort Jesus’ disciples, lead them in all truth, remind them of the words of Jesus, and empower them to carry out Jesus’ commission to spread the Gospel.
See John 14 verse 26, 15 verse 26, and Acts 1 verse 8. Each member of the Trinity works within the structure of authority and fulfils a specific role, perfectly complementing the others and demonstrating God’s glory. The members are not independent of one another, but God the Father is recognised as the authority who directs and empowers the Son and Holy Spirit to carry out his will. Human authorities are accountable for how they exercise their authority. Let’s stop here for a moment and reflect on these words. God does not only provide the covering for those under his chain of command, he also tells them how to exercise the positional authority he has given them.
So God has not only formed the earth for us, he has given us control, dominion. He has entered into a contract with humanity for his abundance of continual blessings, spoke his laws through ancient history, and then wrote them down for humanity, laws by which we need to operate in. In summary, he, God, not only gave us the structure, he gave us the rules on how to act within his covenantal structure. Those under authority are accountable to God for their responses to authority. Since God placed authorities over us, to obey them is to submit to God’s design and authority in our lives.
If an authority asks us to do something that is wrong, we need to appeal to him and explain why we cannot violate God’s laws. Whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance, for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3 verses 23 and 24. 1 Peter 5 verse 5 through 7. Thus, God’s design can be implemented in our relationship with him, our families, our communities, and our nations. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 14 verse 26. Covenants are administered by God’s representatives, who function according to a hierarchical chain of command. A hierarchy, simply defined, is an order that runs within a particular alignment. Like automobiles that need to be properly aligned, covenants work best when they function in God’s ordained order. In 1 Corinthians 11 verse 3, Paul lays out this principle of God’s hierarchical relationships in a much broader context. I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.
No person who names the name of Jesus Christ can claim autonomy. No man may say, because I am a man, I can do whatever I want. No, Christ is your head, your covering. You are answerable to him. Each of us is under authority. There is even a hierarchy in function within the equality of the Trinity, because Paul said God is the head of Christ. That’s why, when Jesus was on earth, he was obedient to the Father and said he would only do the Father’s will. God works through a chain of command, even within himself, in order to accomplish his plan and programme in history.
Why is this so crucial? Because if you rebelliously break God’s chain of command, you automatically lose the fullness of his blessing and his covering. You have rebelled against God’s order. The four biblical authority structures. God ordained human authority in four areas, and established a specific chain of command in each area. This structure does not express superiority or inferiority. Just as each member of the Trinity is essential to express the fullness of God, so within social structures, each role in the chain of authority is necessary for the success of the relationship and the fulfilment of God’s plan.
In short, the following is a summary of the areas of authority structures which we will cover in detail in the next two sessions. We will start with family in this chapter, and move through the others in future parts. Dr Tony Evans has defined these four authority structures as follows. God entrusts husbands with the leadership of the family unit. A husband is to love his wife as he loves himself. A wife is to submit to the leadership of her husband, coming alongside him as a helpmate. Parents are responsible to train their children, and children are to honour and obey their parents.
See Ephesians 5 verse 21, 6 verse 4, and Proverbs 6 verses 20 and 21. In scripture, we are instructed to respect and obey government authorities and ordinances, and to live honourably within our communities. National leaders and local officials are to punish evildoers and honour those who do well. See 1 Peter 2 verse 10 through 17, and Romans 13 verses 1 through 5. 3. Church, church leaders, church members. Within the church, the leadership of pastors, elders, and teachers is essential for the health of the body of Christ. Believers are to honour and respect leaders and to submit to one another and walk in humility.
See Ephesians 4 verses 11 through 16, Hebrews 13 verse 17, and 1 Peter 5 verses 1 through 11. Employers are challenged to act with equity and care as they oversee employees, patterning their behaviour after God himself. Who is their authority? Employees are responsible to serve well, doing their work wholeheartedly, as unto the Lord. See Colossians 3 verse 22, 4 verse 1, and 1 Peter 2 verse 18. I like this quote from Dr Tony Evans. He says that, If you want a better world, composed of better countries, made up of better states, composed of better counties, made up of better cities, composed of better communities, illuminated by better churches, and because it is made up of better families, it starts by the better man.
It starts by men becoming kingdom men. In chapter 4, we discuss the definition of the kingdom man, and the role he must play in order for God’s government to be utilised on planet earth. Our next step in building the foundation of an earthly kingdom is that we must take a look at the structured authority of the home. It is through the rightful authority of the home that all other structure authorities are based upon. Without being covered by the covenant of obedience and having the kingdom man in his rightful hierarchical position, we can never be covered by God’s government and his sovereignty.
It is the structured authority and the hierarchy of the home that all other entities use as their structured authority. We need to realise that the future of everything is solely dependent on the home. If we want to bring God back in our communities, our churches, our government, and the governments of the world, we have to understand that we must create in our homes what God intended them to be. It is the home that Satan continues to focus his attention on, because the family unit, the home, is at the centre of God’s plan.
We must come to the understanding that it is the home where all things of society start. Our communities, our churches, our government, and even the world at large is a direct reflection of the majority positions of the home. The home is not only the centre of God’s plan, but the source of all God’s blessings. Thank you for joining us in this exploration of the role of the home in society.
